Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Hi, I'm a beginner to linux and Ubuntu, so please excuse me if my
explanations aren't technical enough.

I've had Ubuntu (64 bit) installed for a month and it has been working
fine. I learned about Xubuntu as another distribution based off Ubuntu
and decided to attempt a dual boot between it and Ubuntu (with Gnome.)
I downloaded Xubuntu-Desktop 64 bit (xubuntu-7.10-desktop-amd64.iso)
fine, and checked the MD5sum to be correct. I then burnt the image to a
blank cd with K3B and it verified the contents as correct. I booted with
the cd and used the "Check cd for errors" option which found no errors.

I then went to install Xubuntu 64 which seemed to proceed normally, the
"percent done" bar was around 94% when it said something along the lines
of "installing grub," but it instantly shot to 100% and said that the
install had completed.

I rebooted and found that Ubuntu was still in the boot list, however
Xubuntu had not been added. Since then I have attempted to overwrite the
previous install multiple times, however in each case Xubuntu did not
show up on the list of OSes. To make sure that I the problem was not my
computer I went and attempted to install regular Ubuntu 64-bit to my
computer again, and it worked. I now have the option of choosing between
either Ubuntu 64-bit, however Xubuntu still will not show up.

I'm somewhat sure at this point that the problem originates on the
Xubuntu 64-bit Desktop install cd.

Previous entries tell to include /var/log/syslog and /var/log/partman
(I could not find "/var/log/partman")

Here's /var/log/syslog :

Here's "/boot/grub/menu.lst":
