dancer58, can you actually open a new bug report? It appears you are experiencing a slightly different bug than Stanley. You appear to have no sound at all whereas his issue was that the system sounds were missing. Also sound issues are hardware specific and it is helpful to the kernel team if bug reports target a specific issue against a specific set of hardware. You may want to try installing the latest linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-7.12 package as that has an updated version of ALSA (version 1.0.16) - https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux- ubuntu-modules-2.6.24. For now I'm going to close this report as Stanley has commented this was resolved after an update.
