Setting the debug mode would just print more information when the driver executes certain functions. This might be not the case after failure. The problem is that the drive itself seems to report the inability to play audio. Reading the driver code the seem to be some other drives that do not report correctly but work when this is ignored. I prepared a patch for testing purposes but you would have to build your own kernel and try whether this works.
