As for the initial report:
please run `rm ~/share/config/kickoffrc` ... this issue is caused by a change
in the underlying structure and should only affect the Favorites entries in the
menu.
As for hasi's issue:
Same cause (change in the underlying structure). You can either launch KDE 4
applications in KDE 3 by running them with absolute path (i.e.
/usr/lib/kde4/bin/dolphin), or by changing the PATH variable in your .bashrc
(export PATH=/usr/lib/kde4/bin:$PATH), or by waiting for someone to upload the
necessary changes to the PPA for Gutsy.
