I'm not having any problems with kwin on either my 64-bit Hardy or Gutsy KDE4 sessions, with the 169.09 Nvidia driver; the problem may still lie with Nvidia, though, because I came across this bug report helping someone on the Kubuntu forum who's having issues with kwin in KDE4, who also happens to have an Nvidia card. I don't think this is platform dependent, because I believe his is 32-bit, but I'll check with him and let you know.
