Are you using KDE3 or 4? (The reports older than half a year are
probably for KDE3)

For me, the hibernate function in the logout dialog do nothing, but 
pm-hibernate (from a virtual console) does work.
Hibernation worked for KDE3 from KDE itself.
Does hibernation (suspend to disk) work for you, but only suspend to ram does 
not?
Are you using KDE3?
Have you tried calling pm-hibernate?
