No, the problem went away, although I am convinced now it is/was related to the nvidia driver I was using, I mean, there were an assortment of other issues; for example, pink lines across mplayer windows, see http://www.harshj.com/2007/12/14/fixing-the-garbled-video-issue-in-ubuntu-for-nvidia-cards/. I've tried rolling back my driver but I had a lot of other xorg problems after so I gave up.
Short answer: the problem is gone now, probably because I upgraded my nvidia driver (geforce 6600). thanks! this is why linux is the future.....
