i am having the same problem as revelation does.
please help. i will have to install Windows XP just to access the contents of
this data-DVD.
$ dmesg | tail `sudo mount /dev/dvd /media/cdrom -t udf`
[sudo] password for shreedhar:

In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
