Ok I have been having this problem on many version of linux, from Fedora
to SUSE to Ubuntu, I am now using Suse 10.1

I did some investigation into why my system was using 100% cpu after
about 19-20 mins of the system being on, this is what would have with
fedora and suse and ubuntu.

in the directory /proc/acpi/processor/CPU0/performance the cpu state
kept getting slower and slower, as this became slower the more processor
power started to get used. after 20mins my laptop was at 100% cpu as
soon as i changed cpu state to state P0 cpu cycles went down to normal
levels and i could start using by system again.

so i wrote a script (not very good at this) but it worked for my system,
the script would check my cpu state every 3 mins and change it if it was
above a certain condition. been doing this now for a good few months no
more lock ups.

so for all you people out there check to see if you are having the same
problem with the cpu performance.
