I might have something for you anyway. Some time ago, I finally managed to install Ubuntu on my laptop, a HP 4417ea. And this shows similar problems as my standalone PC with a Matrox before. With the splash boot option it takes incredibly long time, until the system finally is up and running. I have disabled the splash, and it boots very fast.
