Still, eclipse 3.2 and tomcat 5.5 are in the repos in spite of any java 
licensing concerns. Would updating the packages to current versions rise any 
licensing issues? Don't think so.

Most people don't care whether it's in main or multiverse.

This issue has been reported long ago. Do you mean that Ubuntu team encountered 
the issue only now?

Don't get me wrong, I adore Ubuntu and respect all the effort you put
into it. It's only that sometimes some things seem WAY too lame.
