Ok, I thought it was because the new version of thunderbird was incompatible with something in my old /home/.mozilla-thunderbird directory from Dapper, but soon after it downloaded all my messages from the imap server, it crashed again, just as consistently as before.
I downloaded the one from the mozilla site, and it crashes just as consistently, even after starting over with a new .mozilla-thunderbird directory.
