Fortunately I did the association (Googling for the solution) doing this:
- Right click on a video file
- "Properties"
- Go to "open with" tab
- Select VLC.
- ready, that video file type is associated to VLC. :)

The same for audio files.

But that makes another question: What is "System -> Preferences ->
Preferred Applications -> Multimedia" used for?
