I was affected, at least under gutsy by the "mic instead master" controlling output. I have rebooted the laptop, tried to unmute under windows xp the sound (the sound works correctly so it's not hardware related). I thought that there might be a control used by XP but not by alsa and that the fact that my sound was muted under XP might mute the sound also for alsa but it was a false guess (it might have been something like a volume control stored at a very low level).
So I don't have more ideas. Best A.
