With a new user (with an empty library an the library pointing at an empty folder) an import appears to try to take place. I ended up with 2 tracks, both the same one in the library + the tracks as normal on the ipod device.
This may not be a rythmbox problem directly. I just noticed I have another device under computer with an ipod icon called ipodZx6sdg, as well as the usual ipod drive so it could be a hal thing.
