Yes, I can confirm that this severe problem is still present in hardy.
As far as I know hardy is not using pm-utils yet. It's the plan to use
pm-utils, but currently acpi-support is still the default.

Someone mentioned that probably the kernel calls for idling the hard
drive where mixed up - has this possibility been investigated further?
The first ubuntu on my current DELL notebook computer was an alpha
release of feisty. Apparently, the problem first showed up in gutsy, so
a correlation of this bug to the kernel used seems possible to me.
