Try using 'alsamixer' from a terminal window and make sure all sound levels are unmuted and turned up. By default, ALSA 1.0.16 in Hardy mutes some controls which need to be unmuted before sound can be heard. I just tested Hardy Alpha5 LiveCD and after unmuting, sound is working fine.
