I am happy to announce that with the Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Alpha 4:
* from the live CD I finally managed to install the ATI restricted driver to
get 1920x1200 (had to edit xorg.conf).
* from the live CD, by doing "Update" the resolution went up to 1920x1200,
with no extra driver installed. The resolution was also adjustable as it
should be.

This looks promising for the next live CD release.
