I prefer wiping the drive and installing Ubuntu before Vista, as that works and
lets me boot without a dongle.

Grub doesn't seem to handle a drive partitioned by Vista's installer,
and Ubuntu's installer doesn't handle a GRUB failure very well, so what
can I do to help fix both of those?
