I'm experiencing the same hissing noise (no clicking whatsoever, but
this seems unrelated anyways) on the center speaker as well. I'm using
the onboard soundcard of a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 (chip is an ALC889A):

As long as not both the front and the surround channel are muted, the
center speaker emits that hissing noise (even if center itself is
muted).
I'm running the an up-to-date Gusty with kernel 2.6.22-14-generic.
