This may be because ATI has not implemented xrandr 1.2 in fglrx.  xrandr
1.0options like -s and -v should work fine but others will not.  I
suspect -q requires some 1.2 functionality.  I'm reassigning this bug
accordingly.

Jonathan, since you're using -intel hardware, your issue is not
identical, but probably is broken for the same reason - xgl probably
doesn't support xrandr 1.2 commands.  Please file a new bug about this
against xserver-xgl.
