Public bug reported:

ubuntu's python platform module does not support ubuntu, it currently tries to 
read /etc/*._release (bit more than that, but doesn't really matter) and finds 
debian, and returns debian lenny/sid. 
I think some extra heuristics have to be added to the platform module to allow 
ubuntu to be detected, perhaps through lsb_release? 
alternatively, an ubuntu_release file should be added and that used.
