heret1c: yes of course "hdparm -d1" works, both for hard disk and cdrom.
And you don't need to be a programmer to compile the kernel (I am not a
programmer). You will find different howtos to learn and there are
forums where to post questions abut kernel compiling. I'm afraid the
site administrators won't like discussions out of the bug issue.
