Okay as suggested I attempted to run terminal and enter the command
line you wrote unfortuntly problem #4001 has made its debut, the
terminal screen pops up completly white with the following
message"there was a problem with the command for this terminal:text was
empty or contained only whitespace" , as to error messages when the
games suck in or change screen size we've never recieved any error
messaging.

but you could run this command on a terminal (gnome-terminal or similar):
'apt-cache policy nvidia-glx nvidia-glx-new nvidia-glx-legacy'
and paste the result here.
the "desktop sucks the window" would suggest that the game crashes
("sucking" closed windows is an effect of the compiz window manager...).
You could also start the game from a terminal and when the game crashes
you'll see an error message in the terminal. Copy-paste it here as well.
