Thanks for your reply, but I don't understand how any thing in the link
you gave me can help with this. All it does is give instructions for
running the applet in GDB.  It's my understanding that GDB is used to
find out what is happening inside a program when a crash occurs. This
bug doesn't have to do with a crash at all. None the less, I tried to
run it in GDB after installthing the *-dbg packages for gnome-panel and
gnome-applets. There doesn't seem to be any thing useful there. I'll let
it run for awhile and see if there is more output.
