I have the same exact problem as the original bug report. I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ with an ATI ALL-IN-WONDER X800 XL and an asus M2N-SLI Deluxe motherboard. Tried the Ubuntu Live i386 and it boots fine. Also tried Fedora 8 Live 64 also boots fine.
