Unable to reproduce; in the interim I had to wipe/reinstall system, and I can't reproduce the bug now. Methinks it had to do with other programs installed on the system, maybe vmware or matlab. I'll keep track of Pidgin's behavior as I install the things I used before, and I'll grab that trace if/when it reproduces -- and let you know what the magic package was. Thanks!
