Since my last post a lot has changed on my system. I have a totally different computer (well, the mouse and keyboard are the same) and I had to make a fresh install of Gutsy for this machine. I don't have this problem anymore with this setup, and if I remember correctly, I was able to get things working with my old computer too. I should have posted this long ago, but I think this was actually a kernel issue which happened under heavy load. I think I had the "386" kernel when I had these problems, and moving to "generic" fixed things. If anyone still has this problem, that's one thing you could try...
