The bug is still there in hardy and I understand multiverse's packages' bugs 
are now tracked here. 
The problem lies within mplayer's desktop file and is very easy to fix : The 
line "gmplayer %U" has to be changed to "gmplayer %F".
%U means the program accepts multiple URIs on the command line, which mplayer 
does not, it doesn't understand the 'file://' in the beginning of the path.

A workarround is to do said change manually using the edit menu utility,
but it has to be done for every user on the system.
