I can reproduce this in a sandbox environment where there's no /proc
mounted. You're running this on a LiveCD environment right? Could you
check if the proc is mounted? --> mount | grep proc

If /proc is not mounted for some reason, then do 'sudo mount -t proc
proc /proc' and try installing sun-java6-jre again.
