Unfortunately testing is not so easy, as the box is a production server... I will see if I can arrange for that during a maintenance downtime.
As I had to get the system (in particular the backups) running, I decided shortly after submitting this bug report to build a kernel myself. I now run 2.6.24.2 from kernel.org, which already does include the patch as indicated in the link above.
