I think I've got it.

/etc/nsswitch.conf has the following line in it:

hosts:          files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4

I swapped it for this line, getting rid of the 'mdns4' records:

hosts:          files dns [NOTFOUND=return]

After this and a 'sudo /etc/inet.d/networking restart' the domain join
CLI command worked (haven't tried the gui yet).

What about removing an Ubuntu box from a domain? is this possible?
