Please start Firefox from the command line with "LC_ALL=C firefox".
Are you talking about the menu item "Help - Check for Updates" being
greyed out? That of course is to be expected. It is ubuntu's
responsibility to install the latest version of firefox on your system.
That is what a packaged distro is about.
