Another update -- earlier I said that the problem went away when switching to iwl3945 from ipw3945 on my Dell Inspiron 1420. Actually, with the iwl3945 version included in the latest kernel for Ubuntu 7.10, I still experienced periodic network lockups (on the order of once a week or so), just not nearly as bad. I found instructions here
