Another update -- earlier I said that the problem went away when
switching to iwl3945 from ipw3945 on my Dell Inspiron 1420. Actually,
with the iwl3945 version included in the latest kernel for Ubuntu 7.10,
I still experienced periodic network lockups (on the order of once a
week or so), just not nearly as bad. I found instructions here

http://jkyamog.blogspot.com/2007/12/linux-install-on-hp-6910p-using-
ubuntu.html

on how to rebuild the linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-14-generic package
from source after updating the source for the mac80211 and iwlwifi
packages to the latest versions. This has resolved the lockup issues
but wireless still does not work after suspend or hibernate.
