Applet is essential for following reasons:

1) It lets the user know what is going on and warns about indexing and
how to configure and turn it off if they desire

2) it can pause tracker - both manually and automatically to prevent
machine slowdowns. Svn version can auto pause whenever you move mouse or
press a key

3) it provides status and progress feedback (latest svn version uses a
tooltip for this)

4) provides convenience menu for common actions (search/prefs/stats etc)

there are options to hide or not animate it in latest svn too
