Hi Basilio, Thanks for the response. After a little more searching through launchpad I believe I've found an already-reported bug that more fully describes the totem crash I was experiencing (bug no. 181172, totem dumps core shortly after startup). My backtrace, valgrind, and strace logs are available there in addition to the list of related packages I had installed at the time. Since then, however, I switched back to Ubuntu proper as Xubuntu was giving me quite a few errors. I do not know if totem left a crash log in /var/crash, but I will remember to look there the next time I experience a crash.
Interestingly, I wonder how related this is to the continuing problem that is the ATI fglrx proprietary driver. I was using the 8.1 catalyst driver for the Xubuntu install. Now, under Ubuntu I'm using the version through xorg-driver-fglrx package, I do not have the same issues with totem crashing. Unfortunately, I cannot run compiz now. Ah well, at least it's more stable.
