The proper syntax for this is
set -o emacs # to turn emacs-style editing on
and
set +o emacs # to turn emacs editing off
So the meaning of "set -o emacs off" would be equivalent to "set -o
emacs; set off".
It's admittedly confusing, but I believe bash is conforming to spec
here.
