Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev

Hardy i386, evdev 1:1.2.0-1

evdev takes control of all devices even if it's specifically disabled in
xorg.conf. I have this in xorg.conf:

Section "Module"
        Load "glx"
        Load "v4l"
        Disable "evdev"
EndSection

However, evdev is still loaded and still takes over my mouse and
keyboard. This is WRONG WRONG WRONG because evdev doesn't work right
with my mouse (a Logitech MX Revolution) and there's no way to get
Emulate3Buttons with evdev. Therefore evdev is not wanted on my system.

Even after I have purged evdev, something in xorg or in the Ubuntu
package of xorg continues to try to force me to use it:

(II) LoadModule: "evdev"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module evdev
(II) UnloadModule: "evdev"
(EE) Failed to load module "evdev" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No input driver matching `evdev'
(II) LoadModule: "evdev"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module evdev
(II) UnloadModule: "evdev"
(EE) Failed to load module "evdev" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No input driver matching `evdev'
(II) LoadModule: "evdev"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module evdev
(II) UnloadModule: "evdev"
(EE) Failed to load module "evdev" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No input driver matching `evdev'
(II) LoadModule: "evdev"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module evdev
(II) UnloadModule: "evdev"
(EE) Failed to load module "evdev" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No input driver matching `evdev'

This behavior is seriously broken. I know that some people seem to
think that evdev is the Holy Input Driver but, until it actually works,
Ubuntu shouldn't try to shove it down my throat. When I put Protocol
"ExplorerPS/2" in my xorg.conf, that's what I mean and I don't need some
script coming around and overriding my explicit preferences.
