Apparently there was a bug where the linux sound "system" would put the
card in a very BAD state...  I could not get my sound back even by
reinstalling.

The fix, believe it or not, was to boot into Windows which reset the
sound card on boot -- then sound worked fine.

I had the instance when sound would stop and even restarting the system
or reseting the alsa settings or recompiling the alsa drivers would not
fix the issue.

However... every time the problem could be simply fixed by booting into
windows, logging into my profile and then restarting into linux.

AGAIN, restarting the system and booting back into Linux w/o booting
into Windows would not fix the problem.
