Public bug reported: Today I upgraded from kubuntu 7.04 to 7.10. The upgrade has mostly been smooth, but I am unable to print anymore. Back when I installed 7.04 it took quite a while to get printing working and I have lost all the steps I took at the time. However, I simply cannot get anything to work now.
What I know is that kde's printer configuration tool didn't work with gutenprint for some reason in 7.04, so I installed that by hand. Then I used the web URL (http://localhost:631/) to get at most functions. Eventually I wound up installing BEH (the backend error handler) as well. After the upgrade I can see that any job I try to print - even a test page - gets queued up and is listed as "processing" briefly, but then gets switched to "held" status for some reason. I've deleted and recreated the printer several times, fiddling in various ways, but all to no avail. The only possible clue I have at this point is the following error message displayed on the printers page in the CUPS web interface (http://localhost:631/printers/): Gutenprint_USB_Printer_1 "Cannot write /50-jeffp-cupsjob6819: Permission denied" That error message is interesting, but I don't know where it should be trying to write that file. If it really is trying to write it into /, that might be a problem, of course. My version of ubuntu is: $ cat /etc/lsb-release DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=7.10 DISTRIB_CODENAME=gutsy DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 7.10 I have no idea which package might be the problem here. This was working before the upgrade. I suppose it might be something related to gutenprint, or to the cups system itself. If it's just a permission problem on some directory, that might be something else even. The output of "printbuginfo -u" is attached. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
