The problem was not fixed. Here is a record of my attempts to boot a
liveCD and install Kubuntu Alpha 6 (KDE4 version).

Default kernel options: file=/cdrom/preseed/kubuntu-kde4.seed boot=casper
initrd=/casper/initrd.gz quiet splash --
Saved log files are in logs.tar.gz.

Try 1: noapic all_generic_ide (no quiet or splash)
Kernel options: file=/cdrom/preseed/kubuntu-kde4.seed boot=casper
initrd=/casper/initrd.gz -- noapic all_generic_ide
Notable items amid the massive amount of output:
sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 48x/48x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray

It actually started to run KDE4, but then this happened:
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 126235
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 126236

This was followed by a bunch of squashfs errors. Ctrl-Alt-Del from a
USB keyboard successfully rebooted the computer.

Try 2: noapic all_generic_ide (no splash)
Kernel options: file=/cdrom/preseed/kubuntu-kde4.seed boot=casper
initrd=/casper/initrd.gz quiet -- noapic all_generic_ide
This happened immediately:
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 355409
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 355410
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 355409
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 355410

This kept going with a few other logical block numbers (335411 - 335423)
until I rebooted. Ctrl-Alt-Del from a USB keyboard successfully
rebooted the computer.

Try 3: noapic (no splash)
Kernel options: file=/cdrom/preseed/kubuntu-kde4.seed boot=casper
initrd=/casper/initrd.gz quiet -- noapic
This happened immediately:
hda: error code: 0x70 sense_key: 0x03 asc: 0x11 ascq: 0x05
Buffer I/O error on device hda, logical block 355273

The same hda error kept occurring, while the buffer I/O error repeated
with different block numbers. Ctrl-Alt-Del from a USB keyboard
successfully rebooted the computer.

Try 4: acpi_use_timer_override (no splash)
Kernel options: file=/cdrom/preseed/kubuntu-kde4.seed boot=casper
initrd=/casper/initrd.gz quiet -- acpi_use_timer_override
Lots of USB errors like the following:
hub 1-5:1.0: hub_port_status failed (err = -62)
hub 1-5:1.0: Cannot enable port 1. Maybe the USB cable is bad?

I got the following:
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 301533
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 301534

However, the machine continued to boot. X loaded. KDE4 loaded.

I then opened Konsole and ran md5sum /dev/hda. It completed successfully with
no new messages in /var/log/dmesg or /var/log/messages.
At this point, I copied dmesg and messages to another computer (see
try4/dmesg-pre.log and try4/messages-pre.log).
I then attempted to install Kubuntu.
The installer loaded, but upon clicking "Next", dmesg reported lots of buffer
I/O errors on logical blocks around 82741, plus hda error code 0x70 with
sense_key 0x03, asc 0x11, and ascq 0x05. The computer more or less locked up.
I managed to switch to a VT and reboot with Ctrl-Alt-Del.

Try 5: acpi_use_timer_override all_generic_ide (no splash)
Kernel options: file=/cdrom/preseed/kubuntu-kde4.seed boot=casper
initrd=/casper/initrd.gz quiet -- acpi_use_timer_override all_generic_ide

It hung several times during boot, but seemed to work. KDE4 loaded.
I ran md5sum /dev/scd0 in VT 2 while watching VT 1 for any messages. It
completed successfully with no new messages in dmesg or /var/log/messages. I
backed up the results of dmesg and /var/log/messages at this point (see
try5/dmesg-pre.log and try5/messages-pre.log).
I then switched back to X and attempted to install Kubuntu.
VT 1 then reported lots buffer I/O errors from device sr0, with logical block
numbers around 292284.
Ctrl-Alt-Del on my USB keyboard did NOT help. I could switch to other VTs and
type commands, but to no avail.
SysRq-B, however, worked.

I then successfully used the very same disc to install Kubuntu-KDE4 in a
virtual machine on a different computer (a notebook with a SATA optical
drive and an Intel chipset).
