Do you still experience your problems in Gutsy (or Hardy, the development
version)? You can use a LiveCD to test it.
bwallum, does the fix (Option "UseEDID" "False" - see the description)
fixed it for you? Otherwise it sounds like a different problem and
should get reported, if you can reproduce it in Ubuntu Hardy.
