to be precise:
i did the installation of ubunto from dvd with the network cable unplugged. the 
skype install i did by clicking on the skype.com deb pkg. i uncommented then 
the deb lines commented in sources.list and hoped it will get it from the 
network and not from the dvd. but still it fails with the cd not available 
error message.


finding out the version of ubuntu with system-about fails with a crash,
reporting a crash report fails with "you need to upgrade XX packages",
and upgrading fails with rendering the x server unusable so i had to
reinstall. but this is independent - and not part of the not beeing able
to install skype bug.
