I believe that I have the same problem with my Atheros chip too. Looking at iwconfig while NetworkManager is doing it's thing, it appears to associate with the SSID, but then continues scanning. The nm-applet never gets the first green indicator, which I assume means physical connection (associated to a wireless network).
