I believe that  I have the same problem with my Atheros chip too.

Looking at iwconfig while NetworkManager is doing it's thing, it appears
to associate with the SSID, but then continues scanning.  The nm-applet
never gets the first green indicator, which I assume means physical
connection (associated to a wireless network).

If I run the following commands after disabling wireless in nm-applet, I
can get onto the wireless, so it isn't the driver, but network-manager.

iwconfig ath0 essid <ssid>
iwconfig ath0 key <key>
iwconfig ath0 enc on
dhclient ath0
