Having the same problem on hardy heron (alpha) I'm not sure what you mean with 'both drivers isntalled'. It's failing on r300_dri.so for me. I can't load the fglrx driver, i'll get a blank screen after login. Hitting ctrl-alt-backspace shows me my background for a sec, and then the login window (as expected).
I doubt btw that the original poster had to mention so much vmware info, as it most likly also pops up with a simple glxinfo call.
