Thanks for looking into this Steve.
If the problem is indeed only the missing TERM, then I think this is not
high priority anymore and more a bug in the upgrade tester (and package
tester) than in mdadm. While I think maintainer scripts should not fail
if TERM is unset, I also think its something that is very rare in
practice.
