I've a similar bug on my Acer Aspire 5100 with my "HDA ATI SB" PCI
soundcard. I'm using Kubuntu.
$ lspci | grep -i audio
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SB450 HDA Audio (rev 01)
$ lspci -n | grep `lspci | grep -i audio | awk '{print $1}'`
00:14.2 0403: 1002:437b (rev 01)
On Kubuntu Feisty the volume control with the keyboard keys works
perfectly. On Gutsy I can only change between 0% - 11% and mute.
Changing the volume with kmix works. It doesn't help to change the
channel. This issue has something to do with the new kernel/alsa. I
installed on feisty the gutsy kernel and had the same problem. I
compiled a vanilla 2.6.24.3 kernel and had the same problem. But today,
I tried the Zen Kernel (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ZenKernel) on feisty and
the volume control worked! Maybe these guys have a patch that resolves
this problem.
