  xbacklight worked as expected under Gutsy, but does not work at all
  under Hardy.  Running xbacklight from the command line echoes what you
  last set the lcd brightness value to, but the brightness is not changed.

+ $ xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL native

+ from the command line fixes the problem.
