I think it should operate by looking at the font from the previous
character and switch to that font when insert special character is used.
That way it doesn't default to any specific font but to the current one
in use in the area of the document you are inserting the character into.
This would also solve the problem where you have to insert several
special characters in a row since it would pick the font that the
previous character was entered using since it is the previous character
in the document. However, it would not help in the case where someone
needs to sprinkle individual characters around a document using a
specific different font, that probably isn't as common a case.
