For me the solution at the time was removing the splash screen at boot
and shutdown via /boot/grub/menu.lst

Just remove the splash option behind:
"# defoptions"
"kernel"

splash = shows the nice pretty picture while your booting
quite = suppresses text output while you are booting.

I like to see every thing so I removed both options and also got rid of
the white screen.
